Summer is in full swing, and 4th of July holiday festivities are quickly approaching. Many Americans choose to spend this time of year with family and friends at picnics, barbecues, pool or beach parties, on camping trips, or doing a variety of other summertime leisure activities. While the 4th of July can be one of the most enjoyable times of the year, it is important to remember some basic precautionary measures to help ensure your safety and the safety of those around you. We encourage you to celebrate safely by practicing the following:

When Barbecuing

  • Always grill outdoors, in well-ventilated space, away from the house, deck, trees etc.
  • Never leave a lit grill unattended, and keep children and pets away while in use.
  • Don’t leave food out in the hot sun. Keep perishables refrigerated or in a cooler with ice.

Water Safety

  • Swim at beaches or pools where lifeguards are present. Always make sure children are supervised by an adult.
  • Children and inexperienced swimmers should wear USCG approved life jackets.
  • Never dive head first into the water.
  • Don’t swim alone.
  • The sun’s reflection off the water increases your U-V exposure. Routinely apply sunscreen.

Fireworks

  • Best left to the professionals. Find a show, sit back and enjoy!

Following these tips can help you to have a good time while still remaining safe. Enjoy the 4th, stay cool and stay safe!
